Why BIM as we know it does not work and what to do about it!
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is currently aggressively pushed by
industry and governments as the solution to the most stringent problems the
construction industry faces in terms of time, cost, and quality. However, if one looks at
current practical BIM implementations – such as 5D, clash detection, or integrated
project delivery – evidence for real efficiency gains is by large missing. To trigger critical
reflection, I will present case and survey based evidence from the Dutch practice that
shows that there is indeed little correlation between mature use of BIM in organizations
and their performance on cost, time, and quality. Then, by comparing the BIM
implementation hype with the Information System implementation hype that started in
the 1970, I will provide some ideas for a new kind of BIM. A BIM that moves away from
standardization and over structuration of knowledge intensive engineering tasks, towards
more flexible, adaptable, and configurable technology.
