About CETL

The Construction Engineering Technology Lab (CETL) is an educational and community services lab with a broad vision for implementing state of art solutions in the region. With respect to educational aspects, CETL provides services to Integrated Engineering Design Management (IEDM) program which is a newly established Master of Science program at Cairo University. It is a unique program not only in Egypt but also in the Middle East. The offered IEDM degree represents the first systematic attempt to bring Building Information Modeling (BIM) innovative technologies and processes to the Egyptian and regional Construction industry by establishing a unique degree at Cairo University. With respect to community services, CETL performs many services including Software Training Courses, Career Development Courses, Construction Management Services, Building Information Modelling (BIM), 3D Laser Scanning / 3D Printing, Virtual Reality (VR).
Well established national and international preeminent center for the spreading and dissemination of construction management skills and technologies. Highly recognized as a research and training laboratory that can better accommodate the on-going
development taking place in the Construction Management Industry worldwide.

CETL Director: Prof. Mohamed Marzouk

Dr. Marzouk is Professor of Construction Engineering and Management in the Structural Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University. Dr. Marzouk experience encompasses different fields including structural engineering, project management, contract administration, construction engineering and management, and projects’ monitoring. His experience covers different phases of projects including design, construction, monitoring, research, consulting, and project management. He also served as a consultant for many mega-construction projects in Egypt. Dr. Marzouk is the director of Construction Engineering Technology Lab – Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University. Dr. Marzouk authored and co-authored over 200 scientific publications. He acted as a Principle Investigator (PI) for several research grants. Dr. Marzouk has been awarded several national and regional excellence awards.

Senior Researcher: Eng. Mohamed Refaat

Mohamed Refaat Ali is an assistant lecturer in the Structural Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University. He received his Master’s degree in the field construction engineering and management. Currently she is doing his PhD. his work mainly focus on BIM, HBIM, business process management, enterprise systems integration. He is also a senior researcher in CETL and performed different professional and research jobs in the fields of laser scanning, reality capture, ground penetrating radar (GPR), Building Information Modelling (BIM) & heritage BIM (HBIM). He attended many workshops in European universities related to BIM and HBIM. He is capable in a diversity of technologies, spanning from modelling engineering to softawre development, such as various construction managment tools and techniques, various BIM authoring tools, Parametric modelling tools, Unity game engine, various 3D modelling tools, various reality capture tools, various visualization technologies (VR & AR), various optimization tools, various business process modelling tools and techniques machine learning & deep learning libraries and platforms (pytorch, & Keras), web development technologies (MERN stack), many programing & scripting languages.

Senior Researcher: Eng. Mahmoud Metawie

Mahmoud Metawie is an assistant lecturer in the Structural Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University. He received his Master’s degree in the field construction engineering and management. Currently she is doing his PhD. his work mainly focus on laser scanning and reality capture. He is also a senior researcher in CETL and performed different professional and research jobs in the fields of laser scanning, reality capture, ground penetrating radar (GPR), Building Information Modelling (BIM) & heritage BIM (HBIM). He attended many workshops in European universities related to BIM and HBIM. He is capable in a diversity of technologies, spanning from modelling & engineering to softawre development, such as various construction managment tools and techniques, various BIM authoring tools, Unity game engine, various 3D modelling tools, various reality capture tools, various optimization tools, various visualization technologies (VR & AR), various matlab tools and modules.

Researcher: Arch. Maryam El-Sharkawy

Eng. Maryam is a Ph.D. Candidate at Cairo University, Faculty of Engineering, Architectural department. Eng. Maryam works as a part-time Lecturer Assistant and Research Assistant at the Faculty of Engineering (Cairo University) and at the school of Science and Engineering (American University in Cairo). She attained Bachelor Degree in Architecture and Engineering Technology (AET) at Cairo University in 2012 with two international outreach summer programs. She worked as an Architect for ECG Engineering Consultants Group S.A. 2012-2016. Her experience in building performance simulation and enhancement has expanded since she received LEED Certificate by the USGBC in 2014. Eng. Maryam acquired MSC in Environmental design, Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University in 2015 with thesis title’ Design Guide for Educational Building Retrofitted Facades to achieve Low Energy Performance in Egypt’. She has attended Technical Building construction workshop in Berlin for application of building technologies in 2015 and similar workshops in London 2016-2019. Currently she is a proud member of CETL research Team at Cairo University.

Researcher: Arch. Aya Essa

Aya is a 2014 Cairo University Faculty of Engineering “Architecture and Engineering Technology” program graduate. She was granted her master’s degree in Environmental Architecture Design in June 2019. Having specialized in environmental and sustainable architecture design, she applied her acquired knowledge in both research and practice. As an environmental designer, Aya joined Mostadahm architects and planners, a sustainable design oriented architecture practice where she participated in the design process of various buildings, including administrative buildings and industrial halls, with optimized daylight and energy performance based on software simulations. Her practice also involved buildings and urban areas assessment for comfort in informal settlements located in Cairo. As for research work, she joined the American University in Cairo’s sustainable architecture research team where she participated in the hospital patient room’s daylighting optimization research producing conference and journal papers. Starting February 2019, Aya joined CETL team. Aya is currently working on optimizing the daylighting and thermal performance of heritage buildings for reuse. Beside the simulation-related research, she is responsible for the photographic documentation as part of heritage building information modeling documentation project.
